Natural Home Made Beauty Recipes

Introduction

Beauty may radiate from within, but a skin-care program can enhance and prolong your physical beauty.  The goal of this section is to keep your skin soft, smooth and beautiful.  A good skin-care routine can supplement the natural processes that keep your skin healthy and vibrant.  The result:  a naturally beautiful you!

There is an endless variety of commercial cleansers, moisturizers and conditioners on the market today.  Some work reasonably well.  Others do not.  The thing they have in common, and even brag about, are natural ingredients: aloe, coconut oil, lanolin, and henna are just a few samples.  So, if all those high-priced skin conditioners contain natural ingredients (most of which you can find at your local pharmacy or health food store) why not mix up your own collection of facial creams and cleansers and save hundreds of dollars?

The following are filled with recipes for beautiful skin and hair similar to those used by our ancestors and contain the basic active ingredients in most of today's commercial creams.  These recipes are not engraved in stone.  You may wish to experiment by trying variations in oils, scents or colours.

Before You Cook

Although most of the ingredients can be acquired quite easily, the location of some may require a little more effort on your part.  For these items, ask your pharmacist or the manager of your local natural food store if they carry them.  If not, don't be afraid to ask them to look it up in one of their supplier's catalogues.  These items are available.

The recipes can be whipped up without the aid of fancy culinary equipment.  All you need are some basic cooking utensils like measuring cups, mixing spoons, mixing bowls and a small double boiler.

Meals & Cucumber Juice

It will not be necessary to purchase all the essential ingredients.  Some can be prepared in your own kitchen.  For example, to make cosmetic meals, like...Almond or Ground Oatmeal, toss 2 cups of blanched skinless almonds into a blender.  Blend to a finely grated Parmesan cheese consistency.  Results - 1/2 cup of almond meal!  Ground oatmeal is made up the same way.  Cucumber Juice:  Cut up a half cucumber (unpeeled, but washed clean) and blend until liquefied.  Heat the liquid gently - don't boil then strain through a mesh nylon stocking.  Refrigerate leftover juice and use later as a wash.

A Splash of Colour

Add a Splash of Colour to your creations with a drop or two of food colouring!  But easy does it...one drop goes a long way!  The Art of Jarring:  When you finish preparing a recipe, don't just dump it into any old container.  Find an attractive one...a coloured antique if possible.  If you store your cream in an ugly jar, you'll begin to hate it in a short period of time and will never use it.  The emotional reasoning is that products in ugly jars can't make you look more attractive.

The Easy Way to Cook Creams

Cooking creams is probably one of the easiest things in the world to do, but if you like things perfectly clear do this: buy two inexpensive candy thermometers; put one in the double boiler with the wax-oil part of a cream; put the other in the pan containing the water.  When both thermometers reach 160 degrees Farenheit, remove the pots from the heat and proceed as directed.

Facial Toners & Fresheners

These wonderful liquids work to tighten & tone the skin; therefore, they should be used as the final step in cleansing your face.  For those occasions when you don't have enough time for a complete cleansing, these tonics arer great for removing oil & dirt.  Whenever you use them, your face will feel clean & fresh.  Some Helpful Advice:  If your skin is oily, choose the tonics and fresheners with a high alcohol or witch hazel content - and use them often, 3-4 times a day.
