Lime Freshener

1/4 cake (1/2 oz.) gum camphor
1 cup distilled water
juice of 1/4 lime, strained
2 pinches benzoic acid powder
green food colouring

Place the camphor cake in the distilled water.  Cover with several layers of cheesecloth and let stand at room temperature for 3 days.
(Note: the camphor will continue to float on top of the water.)  After 3 days, add a drop of food colouring, the lime juice and benzoic acid.  Shake well.  Keep refrigerated.  Pat on cool (not cold) and shake well before each use.

Lettuce Tonic

1/4 small head iceberg lettuce
1 cup water
2 pinches benzoic acid powder

Cut lettuce into small pieces and put them in a blender with water.  Blend on high speed until frothy.  Strain the mixture through a nylon stocking and refrigerate overnight.  The next morning, strain through a stocking two more times.  Add the benzoic acid and shake well.  Put the solution back in the fridge until ready to use.  Apply cool, not cold.

Buttermilk Freshener

2 tbsp. buttermilk
strained juice of fresh tomato

Shake ingredients vigorously in a bottle (or put in a blender).  Pat on with cotton pads.  Leave on for 10-12 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water.

Parsley Peppermint Rinse

1/4 cup fresh parsley
1 tsp. dried peppermint leaves

Add parsley and peppermint leaves to a cup of boiling water.  Remove pot from heat; let sit for 30 minutes.  Strain the solution through cheesecloth and pour into a bottle.  Use as a facial rinse every time you wash.  It's best to make up a fresh batch every 3 or 4 days.

Super Pore Tightener

6 tbsp. rose water
1/2 tsp. spirits of camphor
2 tsp. alcohol (70% strength)

Combine ingredients in a bottle and shake well.  Apply to your face with cotton pads.  Store in a cool place, but do not refrigerate.

Cucumber Tonic

6 tbsp. fresh cucumber juice*
6 tbsp. distilled witch hazel
2 tbsp. camphor water

Mix all the ingredients together in a bottle and shake well.  Leave the bottle in the refrigerator, but don't apply too cold.  You should take it out of the refrigerator 15 minutes before you plan to use it.

Lemon Astringent

2 tsp. freshly strained lemon juice
1 tbsp. glycerine
1 tbsp. alcohol (70% strength)
distilled witch hazel

Combine lemon juice, alcohol and glycerine in a measuring cup.  Add enough witch hazel to bring the contents to the 1 cup level.  Shake thoroughly and refrigerate.  Apply cool (not cold).  Reshake before each use.

Celery Tonic

Follow the directions for "Lettuce Tonic", except use 1 cup cut up celery instead of lettuce.
