Facial Cleansers
Credit for the invention of cold
cream, any history book will tell you, goes to a doctor named Galen, who lived
over 1,700 years ago. Our guess is that the credit for that first cream
belongs to Mrs. Galen. Consider it for a moment. Do you suppose
the good doctor was really concerned with the effect soap-and-water washing
was having on his complexion?
The basics, good old soap and water,
are wonderful cleansers but, like Mrs. Galen, most of us have cleansing needs
that are as individual as we are. Fortunately, times have changed
since Mrs. Galen's day and women now have an almost endless choice of creams,
lotions, washes and creams. The trick is to find the one which is best
suited to you!
Collected here are recipes for all
types of cleansers. Just whip up one or two creams; you'll find them
quick and easy to prepare and nothing feels finer on the skin than a fresh,
fluffy cream!
Dry-Skin Milk Wash
1 small cake castile soap
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup whole fresh milk
2 tsp. refined odorless castor oil
2 pinches benzoic acid powder
Grate soap and heat it with the
water in a double boiler. At the same time, heat milk and oil in another
pan over low heat. Stir both mixtures well. When the soap has
melted and the milk and oil have blended, remove both pans from the heat at
the same time (Bring the milk-oil mixture to a near boil but do not
boil it. Combine and stir vigorously until the wash is of a uniform
consistency. Add benzoic acid and stir well. Pour into a wide-mouthed
bottle and store in a cool place.
Oily-Skin Astringent Wash
1 small cake castile soap
1 cup alcohol (70% strength)
1 tsp. washing soda
1/2 tbsp. distilled witch hazel
Grate soap, combine it with alcohol
and washing soda and heat in double boilder. Stir slowly until soap
has melted. Remove and let cool. Add witch hazel and stir until
wash is a uniform consistency. Pour into a wide-mouthed bottle.
Strawberry Cleansing Lotion
2 tbsp. fresh strawberry juice
2 1/2 tsp. oil of sweet almonds
1 1/2 tbsp. refined odorless castor
oil
light mineral oil
Over a measuring cup, gently rub
berries against a strainer until you have two tablespoons of juice.
Discard pulp. Add castor and almond oil and stir to blend. Add
mineral oil to the five ounce mark. Stir rapidly and thoroughly.
Pour into a bottle and store in fridge. Shake well before each use.
Rose Water Cleansing Lotion
5 tbsp. safflower oil
2 tbsp. milk of magnesia
2 tbsp. rose water
2 tbsp. distilled witch hazel
2 tbsp. glycerine
Combine milk of magnesia and oil
in a jar. Shake vigorously. Add the other ingredients one at a
time, shaking well after each addition. Reshake before each use.
Basic Cold Cream
1 oz. white beeswax
6 tbsp. light mineral oil
4 tbsp. distilled water
1 tsp. borax
3 drops of your favourite perfume
Grate wax. In a double boiler,
combine wax and oil. Heat and stir until well blended. While doing
this, dissolve borax in water and heat gently. Do not boil. Remove
both pots from heat simultaneously. Stirring constantly, add water
solution slowly to oil and wax. When combined, beat vigorously until
