Dear Patsy,
In a recent
newletter, Brenda wrote that she's unable to see tiny print. I'm unsure if
this would help, but it's worth a try for her to go to "View" on her internet
toolbar (assuming she has Internet Explorer), then to highlight "Text Size"
and select "Largest".
If that's already
been done and still isn't helpful, the only other option I can think of
for Windows98, would be for her to see if she has the "Accessibility" option
functioning :
Go to....Control
Panel>Add/Remove Programs>"Windows Setup" tab
If the top
box called "Accessibility" isn't checked, she would need to place a checkmark
in that box, and then insert her Windows CD to add these features, one of
which is a "magnifier" tool.
Unfortunately,
I am not familiar enough with those features to assist her in using them.
Hope this
helps...even a little.
Dana

Hi Patsy.
With reference
to the clove cure for toothache: I used to use that all
the time (when needed), and recommended it for my husband when he had a
shocking pain and couldn't get to the dentist until the next day. HOWEVER,
he was advised by the dentist that clove oil is tissue-toxic (ie: it
can kill the gum tissue it comes in contact with) and that it was also possibly
carcinogenic! Who do you believe? I can't say that I've had any
problems in the past, nor has my father (who told me about it) - I guess
it's a matter of whether you use it as a first aid treatment, or whether
you are using it on a more regular basis (and should probably go to the dentist
anyway).
Thanks for
your newsletters.

Love your letters!
I thought that some people could use this knowledge: In 1987, the Boren
Act was passed, regarding getting unemployment. If you have to quit your
job because of a sick child or elderly person living with you......so that
you may care for them, you CAN get unemployment................you will probably
need to explain to the Employment office about the Act. It is called the Boren
Act. I know, as I was the first one to receive money due to it. You must
write a letter to your employer, explaining WHY you are quitting......the
illness and the relative who you will be caring for.............get a doctor
to back it up, if possible. Take the letter and the dr's note to the Employment
office, and GET YOUR money! Hope this helps some people! Gladys Gantt,

Hi Patsy,
When my son was 12, he was hit by a car and injured severely. Because he had

the foot odor was quite "offensive"....and he was unable to take a proper

We had a visiting nurse come to the house to make sure I was making the proper
bandage changes; I mentioned the situation to her. She told me to use plain
old antiperspirant on his foot. IT REALLY WORKS!! We found that the roll

I used to work
in pain management and had many people with disc problems. Try asking your
dr about epidural injections. I know that sounds terrible, but its not as
painful as it sounds. they do an epidural injection (kind of like when you
are having a baby) and inject some cortisone into the epidural space. What
that does is releive some of the swelling and cause alot of the pain to go
away. It is usually done in 3 injections, once a week for 3 weeks. (My advise

Hi Patsy,

My mother used to make "onion syrup"........basically it was a sliced onion

would clear our sinuses, and the sugary syrup would soothe our throats. But
it was awful!!! It worked, though.
She was from Maine...maybe there is a regional thing or something, I just
know that whenever the first child got sick, there was a teaspoon of onion
syrup waiting.....and my mom would keep making more until we were better.
Thanks again for your time.....I so look forward to your newsletter....and
I appreciate that you take the time to respond when I send you an e-mail.

TIPS FOR FREEZING
CASSEROLES
** To freeze
a fully baked casserole ** Begin by pre-lining your casserole dish with heavy-duty
aluminum foil, leaving enough of an overhang on all sides to cover &
seal the food later. Assemble the casserole, laying it in the lined pan &
bake as directed, then cool to room temperature. Put in freezer just until
frozen (about 1/2 to 1 hour & it's not necessary to seal it up for this
short freezing time). Once the casserole is frozen, use the excess foil overhang
& seal airtight. Double wrap the foil wrapped casserole in freezer proof
plastic bags, label, date it, then freeze until ready to use.
** To thaw
& Reheat **
Remove the
wrapping & place the frozen food back into the dish in which it was
baked in, cover & defrost in refrigerator overnight. When reheating,
cover & reheat in a 350 degree oven. To test for doneness, insert a knife
in the center of the food. When it is hot to the touch when removed it is
hot throughout.

Is it
humid where you are? (I don't know anything about the Netherlands).
If the air is dry it will dry out the air passages and can also cause congestion.
Sometimes a humidifier or vaporizer will add enough moisture you could sleep......I

or Mentholatum. It clears the nose. (You just wouldn't want to
leave it unattended).

Hi Patsy,
Here's
one for the garden......pour beer into an old pie pan or similar shallow dish
and place it at ground level to kill slugs in the garden. They crawl in and
drown. Also , if your plagued with fruit flies an easy way to get rid of
them is to place a small dish of apple cider vinegar near the spot where
you see them....they die by drowning as well! Good thing most
bugs can't swim huh?? Have a great day!

Put grits or
cornstatch on top of ant piles, ants will eat this, then they die!

I wish I knew
of something to get rid of sugar ants in my cabinets.. I can't even keep cereal
or anything with sugar in it in the cabinets or they get in it-- even if
it hasn't even been open- they can get in it... I've tried vinegar, cinnamin,
chalk line, spearment or bay leaves, and those ant traps.. I hope
someone sends you a hint that will work...Jackie

ANT TRAPS:
Ingredients:
1/3 cup molasses
6 tablespoons
sugar
6 tablespoons
active dry yeast
Mix ingredients
together in a small bowl until they form a smooth paste. Spread the mixture
into plastic lid. Any old plastic container will do. Set the mixture near
the mouth of ant hill. For kitchen areas, coat a strip of cardboard with the
mixture and lay along floor or in crevices where ants travel. Works best
with medium to large ants. Try substituting honey for the molasses.

Ants - Ok also
cayenne pepper will work. Also, cinnamon around the base of the house
and concentrated lemon juice will also work :)
